Reading together in Years 3-6

Ten minutes of shared reading a day builds fluency. Tips on choosing books, asking questions and keeping it fun.

Reading with your child does not stop when they can read alone - it changes. At this age, focus on comprehension: ask 'why do you think the character did that?', predict what happens next, and let your child read to you.

Aim for 15-20 minutes a day, letting your child choose books that interest them - comics and magazines count too. Take turns reading pages so longer books stay accessible while vocabulary grows.

Our tutors recommend keeping a simple reading log. If your child is reluctant to read, ask us at Saturday sessions - pairing them with the right book for their interests is one of the fastest wins we see.
