National Careers Service

Free, impartial careers advice: explore job families, skills assessments and courses across every industry and trade.

The National Careers Service offers free, impartial information, advice and guidance on careers, learning and work. Young people can explore detailed job profiles covering hundreds of roles, from plumbers, electricians and carpenters to software developers, teachers and healthcare workers, each showing typical entry routes, salary ranges and the qualifications expected.

Its skills assessment takes about 20 minutes and suggests careers that match a young person's interests and strengths, which is a great starting point for families unsure which direction to explore. The service also lists training courses, including free courses for adults and school leavers.

Telephone and web chat advice is available, and the job profiles include the alternative routes into each career, whether that is a college course, apprenticeship, traineeship or direct employment.
