City & Guilds - Trade qualifications and apprenticeships

One of the UK's biggest awarding bodies for trade skills, explaining the qualifications behind careers from hairdressing to engineering.

City & Guilds is one of the UK's oldest and most recognised awarding bodies for vocational and technical education. Its website explains the qualifications that sit behind the trades: NVQs, technical certificates and apprenticeship standards in sectors including construction, electrical installation, plumbing, catering, hair and beauty, motor vehicle and engineering.

Families often hear these qualification names without understanding how they fit together. City & Guilds explains each level, what it is worth, and where it can lead, including progression from entry qualifications up to higher apprenticeships and professional recognition.

It is useful for parents checking that a training provider's offer leads to a genuine, employer-recognised qualification, and for young people planning a route into a skilled trade.
